Five Ways to Find More Life

How might we live today to move towards gratitude and joy?

As the end of life draws near, our thoughts tend to focus on relationships with others and with ourselves, not with accomplishments or social status.

Balancing wants and needs, work and life, is not an easy task. Our priorities tend to focus more clearly as life draws to a close, and our ability to reflect on the life we have lived can help others understand more about what is important in their own lives.

The following goals are based on the findings of hospice nurse Bronnie Ware, who found that at the end of life people expressed wishes that fell into these general categories.

I want to to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

Living a life true to ourselves does not necessarily mean doing anything we want, whenever we want. Being true to ourselves means we understand our wants, needs, and values. To live in ways that reflect our own values is a worthwhile effort that grows over time.

I want to balance my work life with leisure, creativity, and time with loved ones.

Many people feel the stress of trying to manage work, family, and personal interests over the course of a lifetime. Being aware of the value of our relationships with others can help us priorities in ways that minimize regret.

I want to be comfortable expressing my feelings.

The ability to express what we are feelings seems like an easy ask. For many of us, however, it can be difficult to share our feelings, especially about difficult subjects. Learning to express ourselves in open, genuine ways, while still considering the needs of others, is a lifelong process that can bring great rewards.

I want to stay in touch with friends.

Many friendships come and go, but some can last a lifetime. Even an occasional note, text, or phone call can help us stay close even when distance separates us from those we love. Friendships can strengthen over time, as our lives take shape and memories become a valued part of ourselves.

I want to let myself be happy.

Happiness can feel like an elusive, abstract state of being. It might mean a quiet contentment or a brief riotous joy, depending on the circumstances. Being generous with yourself means knowing life will not be perfect, and being ok with that truth. Knowing that we are doing our best to care for ourselves and those we love can be enough, if we let it.
