What Should I Know About Hospice?
Hospice is care for the whole person- addressing the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of patients and their families as patients near the end of life. It is a philosophy of care that focuses on improving quality of life through support, comfort and symptom management.
Hospice services provide support to patients with a terminal diagnosis. While services provide for six months of initial care, care can be renewed for qualifying patients. Nearly 30% of hospice recipients spend 7 days or fewer enrolled in hospice prior to death. Many express a wish that they had started services earlier in their illness.

How will I know when the time is right for hospice?
It might be the right time for hospice if there a diagnosis of a terminal illness, or a significant decline over the past six months. Hospice might also be helpful when hospital visits become more frequent, symptom relief becomes the treatment goal, and more support at home would improve quality of life.

What kinds of diagnoses do hospice patients typically have?
Hospice is appropriate for patients with a range of medical conditions resulting in a prognosis of six months or less. These can include advanced cancer,
late-stage dementia, end-stage heart disease, advanced lung disease (COPD), end-stage kidney disease, and progressive neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s or Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS).

How does hospice support a person in their final months of life?
Hospice provides holistic care to support the whole person. Comfort, support, and quality of life are the focus of hospice care. This includes: symptom management,
emotional / spiritual support, caregiver assistance, education about the illness, expected changes, help with medical equipment and medications, access to nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers. It also provides an opportunity for meaningful conversations, planning, understanding, and acceptance.

What else should I know about hospice?
Patients remain in charge of decision-making when it comes to their care and are supported throughout their illness. They also receive services where they are most comfortable: home.
